CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I’m often amazed by the things the human body is capable of. Stories abound of men who single-handedly lift a tremendous weight from another, saving them from an inevitable demise. What about strangers who rush out into traffic to save an errant toddler, barely escaping death themselves…or the battlefield soldiers who go for days without food or water to keep the enemy from crossing the line? Or how about men who jump up on the burning wing of a plane to save a pilot, only later to watch that same man sacrifice his life so that others may live. I don’t mean to speak of myself in a heroic way—far from it. I mention my own deeds because I have firsthand knowledge that the actions taken by others in times of crisis often happen with little to no forethought. It is as if for an undefined period of time—be it one brief moment, or sometimes even days on end—everything is backward, and the body is in charge of the mind.

That’s the place where Hana and I found ourselves that night after Henry tried to kill me. We had plenty to do, and very little time to get it done. Although it may not have been the most humane thing to do, for the time being we had to leave Henry’s body where it was…face-down in the mud.

Hana and I went into the garage and got the container closed up tight. We didn’t remove any of the cash, even though it was tempting. But we knew we’d need it later, and besides, right then neither of us were thinking of going on a spending spree. Once the container was closed back up, we carried it to the front porch, which sounds simple enough, but with the rain that had fallen, the ground was wet, and we didn’t want to leave an ever-deepening trail between the house and the garage. It might not fool a seasoned investigator, but why make someone’s job easier if that person might be looking to lock you up and throw away the key?

Once the container was on the porch, Hana looked at me and said, “Now what?”

Our shoes were covered with mud, and I didn’t want to leave a trail inside the house either. “Let’s get our shoes off. We’ll hide the container in the cellar behind the coal chute.”

“Are we going to leave it here?”

“I haven’t exactly thought that part through yet, sweetheart, but we don’t want it any place out in the open where the Davenport detective might see it.”

Moving the container of cash into the basement and stacking it behind the coal chute proved harder than I thought it might be. The stairwell was very narrow, which meant I had to carry the container lengthwise, which was awkward because the thing was much heavier than I thought it should be. When I finally got it down the stairs, I cleared an area behind the coal chute…a filthy job all on its own, then stuffed it away, satisfied that no one would bother to dig through a pile of coal to find it.
